How to draw a raffle fairly and prove it
Methods to draw your raffle with no doubt left: a live draw, an official public lottery or the app itself. How to prove to everyone that it was clean and avoid complaints after the result.
The selling can go perfectly, but if the draw raises doubt, your reputation sinks and the next raffle does not sell. Drawing well is less about luck and more about transparency: everyone needs to be able to check that it was clean. Here are the methods that work and how to prove the result.
The golden rule of the draw
No matter the method, it has to meet three things:
- Be truly random, nobody picks the winner.
- Be verifiable, any participant can check it.
- Be public, announced in front of everyone.
A draw done alone in a room, with nobody watching, will always raise "how do I know it was not rigged?". Avoid that from the start.
Method 1: a live draw
The simplest and most transparent. You open a live stream on Instagram or WhatsApp, or do a video call with the group, and draw on the spot.
- How to do it: with the list of sold numbers in view, use a random picker on screen or numbered slips in a bag. Show the result live.
- Why it works: nobody doubts what they saw happen in real time.
- Watch out: state up front how many valid numbers exist, so it does not look like you added or removed anyone.
Method 2: an official public lottery
The preferred method for larger raffles, because the source is external and nobody controls it. You agree beforehand that the winner will be defined by the result of an official public lottery on a specific date (in Brazil, many use the Loteria Federal).
- How to do it: choose the draw ("the lottery result of [DATE] counts") and the reading rule (the last two or three digits of the main prize, depending on how many numbers your raffle has).
- Why it works: the result is official, public and impossible to manipulate.
- Watch out: define the conversion rule before selling and write it on the raffle art, so there is no ambiguous reading later.
Method 3: the app itself
If your raffle is digital, the draw can come from the same place the numbers live. My Raffle considers only the numbers actually paid and draws among them, removing the risk of including someone who did not pay or forgetting someone who did.
- How to do it: with the raffle closed, trigger the draw in the app and show the screen to the group (a screenshot or live).
- Why it works: the base is the real list of payers, with no side spreadsheet.
- Watch out: announce the result to everyone right after, in the same channel where you sold.
How to announce the result
Whatever the method, the announcement closes the trust loop:
- Share the drawn number and the winner name.
- Use the same channel as the sale (the group, the status, Instagram).
- If it was a public lottery, show the official result alongside.
- Hand over the prize and, if possible, post a photo of the delivery.
There is a ready result message template in WhatsApp raffle message templates.
Before any draw
Keep in mind that a large public raffle may have legal rules depending on where you live. The draw itself does not cover the legal side, so check local rules before organizing something big.
A fair draw is what makes people buy from you again. Define the method before selling, write it on the art and follow it to the letter. To run everything in one place, from selling to the draw, create your raffle at myraffle.app.
